Mindshare Unplugged spotlights and interview rising stars across Mindshare North America – people who exemplify our core values of Provocation, Speed, and Teamwork. Say hello to Sarah Rothschild, Senior Associate in our Portland office, and find out what makes her tick.

1) What inspired you to go into the media industry?

I always thought of myself as a super analytical person with a passion for culture, and honestly figured I would end up in PR. After an internship at a local agency I realized I was looking for something more strategic and creative. It wasn’t until I was chosen as the media lead on my university’s NSAC team (National Student Advertising Competition) my senior year, that I was convinced advertising, and media specifically, were for me. I had finally found an industry where I could utilize both my skills and passions in a way to create effective and meaningful campaigns. As I continue to learn more about the different facets of the media industry, I can’t help but get inspired and hungry for the innovation that is to come.

2) Give us one big prediction for the media industry of the future?

Younger generations are completely overwhelmed and adverse to blatant advertising messages and we’ve seen time and time again that the true way to get their attention is through personal connection and social experiences. Throughout the next five years, digital advertising will continue to get more efficient through AI, advanced data signals, and hyper-targeting, so it’s our job as marketers to make each interaction more meaningful and authentic. I think this pivot will also challenge brands to use their vast resources of data and future intelligence in innovative ways beyond the technology that exists today, and push the limits of how we use emerging tech such as voice, AR/VR, and AI.

3) If you could give one piece of advice to your college-senior self, what would it be?

Be patient. Your passion will be noticed, just remember to enjoy each step along the way while you crush your goals.

4) Last one: if you got a blank plane ticket today, where would you go – and why?

Hong Kong without a doubt! It’s been at the top of my list since graduating college; I’ve had professors and friends describe it to me as a fast-paced, multi-cultural, global city and I’ve been sold ever since. The breadth of culture to dive into is exhilarating: from the food and architecture, to the technology! Giant Buddha is calling my name…
