On Veteran’s Day, American Family Insurance, Mindshare and Amazon partnered together with ChickTech, a nonprofit dedicated to retaining women in the technology workforce and increasing the number of women and girls pursuing technology-based careers.
Brand Ambassador Kathy Ireland, who rose to fame as a supermodel, but had a dream of starting her own business and now runs a successful multi-million dollar technology company, joined the more than 150 women in attendance.
The day was dedicated to local teenage girls (13-17) and their parents to immerse them into a day filled of inspiration themed around STEM, so they are able to envision their own careers one day being in technology. The activity stations that reflected this: building an Alexa skill (led by Amazon and an engineer from their Alexa team), making soft circuit bracelets, envisioning their dreams with a vision boards (this station was run by Kathy Ireland) and learning video game design/programming. There was also a Q&A session with women tech leaders from Amazon, ChickTech, AmFam and our Veteran hero.
Along with lunch and having a DJ play teenager’s favorite tunes, Portland’s famous VooDoo donuts were also served. Each girl went home with a stacked goodie bag filled with a journal, a book highlighting women working in tech, a “smart” water bottle, an Echo Dot and a YOORX, a wristband device which tracks activity and sleep and includes push notifications.
